George Potter was appointed Director of Public Safety in Perry, Georgia on March 7, 2006. He oversees the Public Safety Departments, consisting of: Perry Police Department with 40 Officers and 3 civilians, Perry Fire Department with 19 Officers and 1 civilian, and the Animal Control Department with one Civilian Officer and 10 volunteers. The Perry Police Department has been a State Certified Agency, meeting over 120 professional law enforcement standards. The City of Perry is highly rated for having one of the lowest crime rates for similarly sized cities in America.

Director Potter previously served as the Chief of the Perry Police Department since March 18, 1996. In 1999, he also served as the Perry City Clerk for three months until the next City Manager was hired. Prior to coming to Perry, he retired from the Columbus Police Department as the Detective Major after serving for 26 years.

Director Potter holds a Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University along with a Masters of Science in Public Administration from Columbus State University. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College and the FBI National Academy. He served an adjunct Professor at Ft. Valley State University for ten years, and was President of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police in 2003. Additionally, he was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Corrections in 2009 by Governor Sonny Purdue.

He and his wife, Connie, have one daughter.
